31 August, 2009According to estimates, there are close to 300,000 people in the IDP camps in Vavuniya alone. Although the resettlement process is getting underway, systems to ensure effective management and living conditions in the camps need to be put in place. UNDP has, in fact, been supporting efforts by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Sri Lanka Land Reclamation Board and UNHCR to improve the drainage and other shelter management activities at Menik Farm. UNDP is primarily involved with providing technical assistance, transfer of knowledge and technology and coordination support.
An Environment Coordinator has also been appointed to work closely with the relevant authorities to develop a waste and sewerage management system, tree-plantation initiatives, and find alternative ways to use waste water such as vegetable cultivation. The Coordinator will work with the District Secretary, Commissioner of Local Government and other relevant authorities to strengthen the overall environment management in the welfare camps as well as in Vavuniya township.
