Strengthening capacity to manage and control Alien Invasive Species in Sri Lanka |
|
Invasive species impact on health, livelihoods and threaten important biodiversity in countries like Sri Lanka. This project aims to build capacity and communications among the multiple stakeholders whose actions impact on the introduction and spread of IAS; foster an enabling policy, institutional and planning environment for effective and informed joint action; and take steps to generate and share knowledge about the rationale, need and specific techniques and best practices to tackle IAS in Sri Lanka.
Objectives
The project will generate substantial benefits at the global level and for Sri Lanka, impacting on both biodiversity conservation and human and economic wellbeing. These include;
- Safeguarding globally important biodiversity, including reducing the risks to endemic species, unique and threatened ecosystems, and protected areas
- Improving control of the export of potentially invasive species out of Sri Lanka, the project will assist in reducing the threats to globally significant biodiversity in other parts of the world.
- Additional global benefits will arise from reducing the risks to production and trade which is important for economies and livelihoods in other countries.
