UNDP Sri Lanka provides technical and operational assistance focusing on developing capacities and an enabling environment for sustainable development; meeting the climate change challenge; conserving biodiversity to sustain livelihoods; sustainable land management for improved productivity; and contributing to save the Ozone Layer. In this regard UNDP works closely with the Government of Sri Lanka, local authorities, the private sector, NGO’s and CBO’s and the civil society to address environmental development challenges related to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).
UNDP also helps Sri Lanka to implement multilateral environmental conventions and protocols; linking environmental sustainability efforts to achieving MDGs; promotion of public–private partnerships; and energy and environment best practices in policy planning and technology transfers. UNDP’s also supports these efforts through the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which promotes medium and large-scale projects to address national level issues and small grant programs to address community needs.
In relation to disaster risk management, UNDP Sri Lanka is actively assisting in the development of a legal and institutional framework on disaster risk management; promotion of efforts to decentralize DRM; streamlining of various local DRM efforts under a common platform; strengthening end-to-end early warning systems and incorporating DRM into national development planning. |
