Despite enjoying a strong democratic tradition, Sri Lanka continues to face challenges to improving governance standards and reaping the development benefits that can result from such improvements.
UNDP is working closely with key government and national institutions to improve governance through a number of strategic initiatives that are aimed at having a broader development impact and will contribute to achieving the MDGs. UNDP's work in governance is also based on the evolving dynamics of reform across the state and seeks to be responsive to the needs of both the Sri Lankan government and its people. One main focus is strengthening key governance institutions, particularly those that have an oversight role and have the moral and legal authority to raise standards of accountability across public life.
In the critical area of justice and human rights, UNDP is also partnering with civil society organizations to support national efforts at ensuring equal access to justice for all communities. |
